Day 1: German Unification Intro

JOURNAL: We have seen how nationalism can divide people. How might nationalism unify people for a noble cause?
    • use the maps in the above document to see the changing map in Europe.
    • pay particular attention to:
      • France's conquest/domination of Europe seen during the 1700's and into the early 1800's
      • France's domination of Europe clearly ends in the early 1800's, as their land is scaled back and the balance is restored in Europe
      • Prussia in the mid 1800's is surrounded by German states controlled by foreign powers
      • Prussia becomes Germany as the Germanic areas unify in 1871
  • Visit the link to ABC-CLIO's reading on the Congress of Vienna (username: upper , password: moreland)
    • use the reading to make sense of what happened in Europe during the 1800's that paved the way for Germany to unify
  • HOMEWORK: Due Wedn 12/19
    • Read Building a German Nation10-1, on p. 330-333 in textbook
    • HONORS: Outline Section AND Answer the Checkpoint questions
    • CP: Answer the Checkpoint Questions
      • What was the German Confederation?
      • What techniques did Bismarck use to unify the German states?
      • How was the new German government, that was drafted by Bismarck, structured?
